BEST FOREIGN FILM

Danish Director, Susanne Bier won an Oscar last night in Hollywood for Best Foreign Language Film. Congratulations.

Her film, In a Better World also won a Golden Globe a month ago.Take a look at my previous post here.
At that point I didn´t know who designed her nice, but very simple silk dress.
But it should be obvious by now, because it was announced that danish designer Elise Gug made this one. The same, but blue this time.

It was only the third time a Danish film won. In 1987 the film Babette´s Feast by Gabriel Axel and in 1988 Pelle The Conqueror by Bille August both won an Oscar.

FASHION BACKERS

Fashion is really big business. . .

Mondrian day-dress by Yves Saint Laurent 1965

I guess it is a matter of trust and of course seriousness and a potential big revenue that makes investors, known as backers, interested in supporting fashion designers.

Almost every well known designer today are backed by big investors. Victoria Beckham and Roland Mouret, who just opened a new store in London are both being backed by Simon Fuller, the entertainment entrepreneur that came up with The Idol-concept.

In France there is to major groups that is investing in and buying up fashion-brands. Louis Vuitton / Moêt Hennesy, known as LVMH, is a major player in that game. They are involved in Fendi, Donna Karan, Marc Jacobs, Kenzo, Céline and Givenchy among others.
The other player is PPR, which was formerly known as Pinault-Printemps-Redoute. Their "luxury devision", the former Gucci Group, now Kering, are the owners of Yves Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, and other brands.

In Denmark we have IC Group, that owns Tiger of Sweden, Saint Tropez, Designers Remix and By Malene Birger and DK Company, that owns the brands In-wear, Matinique, Part Two and Soaked in Luxury.

For designers to get noticed today, they have to be consistent, make a mark, position themselves by designing collections, that makes their name known as a brand, for backers to invest. Because Backers only invest to make some profit out of it, of course.

To get noticed, you have to get your design out there. You can do that by working your way up in a fashion house, by showing designs at different events, exhibitions or Fashion-fairs. Another take could be, if you could make famous people wear your designs.

But first and foremost you have to be true to yourself and your fashion-philosophy if you want to succeed. That I believe.

CELEBRITY FASHION BRANDS

Celebrities are trying to cash-in and make the most of it.

Victoria Beckham Ready to Wear Fall 2009

Several celebrities is challenging the fashion-world by trying to design their own collections or licensing out their name these days.
Because they are famous, they have got the brand. But, I am just wondering, if that is enough to be a credible fashion designers???

Victoria Beckham, Gwen Stefani, Jessica Simpson, Beyonce and the Olsen- twins, just to mention a few. Some of them even have a sense of style and are style-icons and some are more talented then others for sure.

It seems quite unfair though to young talented designers, who are taking a fashion-degree and are working full time to make it. They have a hard time to succeed out there. -And these wanna-be designers are not making it easier.

Luckily some of the celebrities realizes that it is not enough to be a brand, but takes knowledge and hard work to make in the fashion-industry. They often need help to make their collections and are hiring designers to work for them.

I am just wondering, why they don't support/invest in the young upcoming designers, if they really want to get involved in fashion. -And focus on what they are good at and instead.

What do you think about this new trend?

THE TIME-FACTOR 2

Priorities can be difficult sometimes, as I wrote in an earlier post. I love to interact on the internet and writing posts regularly, about what I do and what inspires me.

But it can also be very time-consuming. Now and then I have to take breaks to do, what I really do: To create and make dreams and fantasies come true. That is my passion!

I would like to keep up my blog at the same time though, but I need to get more organized in that re- gard. How do you managed out there? Some advice and feedback would be nice.

As I wrote in an earlier post here, Tom Ford´s way of doing PR affects the whole fashion-industry.

I like that. Almost everybody tones it down at New York Fashion Week right now. Read more in New York Times.

FERDINANDO SARMI

-Might be quite unknown for most people today. But I am fascinated by the simplicity and the combination of colours he used. Even today some of his designs would be very contemporary.

Sarmi was born 1916 in Italy, but went to New York in 1951 to pursue a design-career and became a well known designer at that time.

Like Charles James and Oscar De la Renta, Ferdinando Sarmi also  worked for Elisabeth Arden´s Designstudio, from 1951-1958 as head-designer. After that he opened his own Boutique on Seventh Avenue.
His first collection under his own name, was reviewed: -Sarmi´s devotion to beauty is at it´s ultimate. His collections was consistently described as: - feminine, romantic and "in good taste".
But the times changed in the 60´s and after some financial problems, he closed in the early 1970´s.

He was known for his opulent evening looks, vivid colours, racy hemlines and for using extravagant fabric. Enjoy these examples, that i found on Vintageous.com
