DANISH FASHION / NOW - A REVIEW

-An exhibition, I was looking forward to see, just opened at BRANDTS yesterday. Sorry to say, it actually turned out to be quite disappointing. . .

First of all, my good friend, Tinah and I, was really surprised to see the big crowd - people you normally don´t see or notice, that was attending this opening. Where were they coming from ?

I guess it was partly because of the royal dresses and the celebrity-style that was on display. -And because an exhibition like that, doesn´t come to town often.

The Curators selection of celebrity- and royal dresses was very conventional though, as well as the way it was presented. Of course there were nice dresses, but no surprises and no real vision.

Especially the more commercial part of the display with contemporary retail-designers was hided/ covered up in different printed/transparent textile "walls"/compartments. Because the Curators chose to let one of the known fashion designers stage the display. And again -  poorly selection of clothes for the most part, but with a few exceptions.
Some of the Brands even had staff there to tell people that it was their latest collection and it was available in stores now.

Note! - we were surprised to see how disrespectful some people were touching all the clothes. But maybe they are not used to go on exhibitions. . .

What I missed also, was the lack of information: what was special about each brand and putting the clothes into a context of today.

For that I had to look into the exhibition catalouge, where I found one interesting feature from Maria Mackinney-Valentin. Obviously she knows what she is writing about - and is able to reflect and put fashion into context. She had some good points.

Another part of the exhibition displayed 10 different "fashion-personalities" and their relation to fashion - some of which were already shown in a tv-program with Chris Petersen, one of the Curators. A bit uninteresting, I have to admit.

The exposure of himself in the exhibition was also it bit overdone, for my taste.

All in all - We were not impressed and had to poor it all down with a drink afterwards.

But, go and see and judge for yourself.

2014 - EMMY´S BEST DRESSED

As you probably know by now, I love colors. So, never mind trends. It´s about standing out in the crowd.
In my opinion, the best dressed at the 2014 Emmy´s, that took place August 25, at the Nokia Teatre, L.A.,  looked like this. . .

FOR THE RIGHT REASON

When you look at my last post about The Golden Globes, it is a fascinating world. . . sort of a dream-world really. -And a very seductive one.
It is very easy to get captured like that and by all the things that is going on in the fashion world; you want to be part of it and start to aspire for more. It´s only natural I think, because everybody wants to succeed.

It all made me think of, what it takes to get there. . . and is it something worth striving for at all. I mean, we can´t be famous actors or designers all of us.

According to all the Media and "Reality"-shows these days, it seems like, especially young people think they have to live through the Media to be someone or something. It´s a bit scary.

I have to say - of course it is possible to be happy and content, without being famous. We just need to dream to keep our hopes up, but at the same time be realistic and think about our potential and strenght.
That might show us the right way. As long as you don´t forget what got you started and hold on to that. Sooner or later you will succeed.

Actually I just need to look at my self. . .
-Initially it began, when I was looking for clothes back then. Since I wasn't  able to find anything that I liked, I began to create my own. I made quite a few experiments, finding satisfaction in this process, and finally decided to study and make a career out of it.

BEST GOLDEN GLOBE DRESSES

Of course there were bad choices and bad fitting gowns, but I decided to stay positive.

In my opinion, these actresses stood out in their gowns at The 2014 Golden Globe Awards ceremony, that took place on Sunday, January 12, at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, LA.

PUNK: CHAOS TO COUTURE

A new exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum in New York, was launched a few days ago with The Met Gala - a fundraiser, to celebrate the exhibition.

The Exhibition is about how influential punk has been, how it has affected designers and their work in so many ways.

But when you look at all the guests at the benefit, very few seem to understand what punk was all about. 

It´s not about looking nice and beautiful. On the contrary, it´s about attitude and very rebellious, unconventional and therefor creative. Follow this link and look who didn´t get it. Here is a few who got it. . .

GOLDEN GLOBE DRESSES

There were a lot of "Nude", red and black dresses at the 70th Golden Globe last week.
Some more flattering than others. Some actresses had very bad offers or guidance by their stylists. Either the wrong color, a bad fit or style.
But anyway, let´s concentrate on who stood out. In my opinion the best  dressed were. . .

 -Actress Anne Hathaway sleek and elegant in a simple sequin gown from Chanel.

 Actress Mayim Bialik, from "The Big Bang Theory" looking gorgeous in an embellished gown from Tirani Couture.

 Actress, singer and producer Connie Britton looking glamourous in a KaufmanFranco sequin gown.

 Actress, film director and screenwriter Helen Hunt looking very elegant and contemporary in a gown from Dolce & Gabbana.

Model, television and film actress Jessica Alba looked beautiful in a salmon-colored Oscar de la Renta gown.

DANISH AWARD DRESSES

Danish Fashion Award, the Fashion Event of the year here in Denmark, took place a few weeks ago at Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen.

Danish Fashion Award was founded 5 years ago by Uffe Buchard and Kim Grenaa, to celebrate and promote Danish fashion industry, since it is the 4. biggest industry in Denmark.

They are also the founders of the fashion magazine DANSK, that just celebrated it´s 10th Anniversary with an Exhibition at Danish Design Centre.

This year they finally succeeded in making Aqua-singer, Lene Nystrøm a Co-Hostess.

Ten designers/brands were appointed to dress her up for the Event. Among them, three stod out in my opinion.
Unfortunately I only found this photo of  the very nice dress from Designers Remix, that looked contemporary.

But a black and white dress by the very talented Ann Sofie Madsen and a futuristic fairytale-dress from Trash Couture by Ann Wiberg looked stunning too.

The rest of her dresses were a little bit out of touch: some quite ordinary and not very well fitted, as was some of the attending guests. 

-An Exception was the TV-host, Signe Lindquist, who looked quite stylish and radiant in a vintage-dress from F92.

"STARS EN DIOR"

Not long ago Chanel was publishing a fashionbook about "Northern Women in Chanel"  by Peter Farago and Ingela Klemetz-Farago, who also had an exhibition at Design Museum Denmark in Copenhagen.

I didn´t see it myself, but the exhibition had mixed reviews. . . questioning if it just was a concept to promote Chanel, the photographers and why northern women ? - missing the context.

Now Dior takes it further. "Stars en Dior" is an upcoming book about Dior dressing the Stars of Hollywood. 

-Telling the story of Dior and featuring 250 photos of film stills, location shots, photographs and of course portraits of stars past and present in looks by the iconic designer and his successors.

Books for fashionistas and collectors, but also another way of getting  more publicity and valuable exposure, to keep up the interest I guess. 

"Stars en dior" is published by Rizzoli and coming out in France this May and later on in other countries.

DRESS REVIEW

From the 84th Academy Awards, february 26 at The Kodak Teater in Hollywood.

My favourite dress was not worn by a nominee, but nevertheless fabulous and outstanding. It was the dress of George Clooney´s girlfriend, actress, wrestler and model, Stacy Keibler, who wore an intricate draped dress from Marchesa.

Mila Jovovich also looked stunning in a white one-shoulder draped sequin-dress from Elie Saab.

I prefer Oscar-winner, Octavia Spencer´s beautiful sequined dress from Tadashi Shoji rather than Jennifer Lopez´s version. It doesn´t need to be bare to be sexy. This cut suits her very well.

Camron Diaz looked fabulous in a dress with asymetric flounces and sequins from Gucci Couture.

Giuliana Ransic looked nice in what I first assumed was a Marchesa dress; but actually it is from Tony Ward.

Kristen Wiig looked nice in this fitted dress from J. Mendel with layers of tulle, even though it was a neutral colour.

Emma Stone looked effortless elegant in her red chiffon dress from Giambattista Valli.

Last but not least, Penelope Cruz looked quite stunning in this dress of layers- and draped chiffon. Real Hollywood Glamour style from Armani.

AWARD DRESSES

Some of my favourite dresses at The Golden Globe Awards this year, were Nathalie Portman, who wore a pink Lanvin gown, Angelina Jolie a white Atelier Versace and Tilda Swinton a lilac Haider Ackermann gown.

At big events like this, designers are always offering a selection of dresses from their latest collection, for stylist or the celebreties and actresses to pick from. The stars get to stand out and the designers get some valuable exposure. A profitable liaison.

These dresses are usually not made to measure, but made in a standard size, that might be adjusted.

A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO FASHION

Do you know the designer, Haider Ackermann? He was born in Columbia 1971, studied in Belgium and launched his first collection in 2001. He has his very own approach towards fashion and is known for his masterful draping skills and avantgarde aesthetic.

He finally got some well deserved attention, when he dressed British actress Tilda Swinton in 2009 and  2011 for the Cannes Filmfestival.

As the Fashion editor of the International Herald Tribune, Suzy Menkes said at that time: 

"Tilda Swinton´s sensual elegance wiped the red-carpeted floor with the starlets in their strapless dresses and boned bodices. The Tilda offering was charisma without cleavage." - And I couldn´t agree more !

No wonder why Haider Ackermann has been one of Karl Lagerfeld´s favorites at first to take over at Chanel. But recently he rather sees him as an Givenchy-man. Instead he´s suggesting Riccardo Tisci to take over.

Ackermann has also been mentioned as a possible contender to replace John Galliano at Dior. Though it remains to be seen. For now it looks like Dior are going to reorganize and use an "in-house" designer, such as Marc Jacobs. 

ELIZABETH TAYLOR TRIBUTES

Since Elizabeth Taylor passed yesterday, there has been a lot of tributes all over the internet. It shows her tremendous impact and it is quite understandable.

Because she was very fascinating by the way she looked, acted and related. She was beautiful in every sense of the word and an inspiration for people all over the world.

I dont´think anyone was not affected by her appearence some way or the other. . . Here is a few of the tributes from my bloglist, that says it all: Worn Through, Digs Frocks and books and Decades Inc.

THE BEST DRESSED

-On the red carpet at The Academy Awards 2011 in my opinion were:

Sandra Bullock, who looked stunning in a red gown from Vera Wang.

British actress Helen Mirren, 65 looked very sexy and confident as always, in a grey Vivienne Westwood gown.

Hillary Swank looked faboulous in a sequin-encrusted Gucci-gown with feathers. 

Halle Berry in a similar beaded gown with tulle from Marchesa looked fabulous too.

Last but not least, the young actress Hailee Steinfeld looked very cute in a 50´ed inspired crystal-encrusted gown from Marchesa. These were some of my favourites. What were yours ?
