FASHION CRITICS

Modified picture from The Independent/Getty Images

-After looking at some of this seasons fashion shows, like Celine and Louis Vuitton, I just wonder. Where are the fashion critics of today? -And are they still relevant?

I think today's so called fashion critics are too consensual and not particularly critical, with a few exceptions. They seem only to be there to promote fashion. I guess they are afraid of loosing their privileges; like invitations and front row seats ?

For me, a real fashion critic should have a passion for fashion and design, some kind of qualifications or at least some knowledge about fashion design, savoir faire and a sense of color and materials.

They should be able to analyze and to put a collection into context, culturally and historically.
A fashion critic should be honest, independent, selective and not afraid of speaking his/her mind.

That is why we need independent papers and television channels to take this more serious. Especially today, where almost every critical comment on social media just gets deleted.

Fashion critics like Robin Givhan, Cathy Horyn and Vanessa Friedman are actually there to make sense of it all.

I prefer their qualified opinion rather than some so called random social media influencers. What about you? What do you think?

If you would like a different perspective, take a look at The Fashion Law.

CHANGE OF PLANS

Erik Mortensen (1926-98) for Balmain

Time and again plans are changing. . . Due to different circumstances.
I am looking for another collaboration - to display all my clothes for a big discount-sale, as I told you about in this post a couple of weeks ago.

Is there any shops or empty rooms out there, that needs some attention or is up for a collaboration ? If you know of something, feel free to suggest it!

For any reference, I will give you extra discounts on top of my offers! -Or a very good price for placing a new order!

A ROYAL FASHION PROMOTION

Photo: EPA

We were in Montreal at the same time as an official visit of the Danish Crownprince and princess, including a Danish fashion delegation were visiting Toronto and Ottawa the 17-19 of September.

The official purpose was to strenghten the relations between Denmark and Canada, as well as the partnership between companies. The focus was on health, food, architecture / construction and fashion / design.

Photo: Martin Høien, Billed Bladet

But, as we were checking the Media during the week, we were surprised that we didn´t hear anything about it at all in Montreal. Afterwards, I only found something on a few blogs and Daily Mail online.

Maybe more important things were going on in Canada or the preparations were not in order. I don´t know. But at least I hope it payed off somehow.

2014 - EMMY´S BEST DRESSED

As you probably know by now, I love colors. So, never mind trends. It´s about standing out in the crowd.
In my opinion, the best dressed at the 2014 Emmy´s, that took place August 25, at the Nokia Teatre, L.A.,  looked like this. . .

Allison Janney gets big points for choosing this outstanding, very elegant draped violet number by Nicolas Jerbran. PhotoCredit: Frazer Harrison, Getty Images.

Laura Prepon´s daring choice in this emerald green and turquoise number by Gustavo Cadile was also nice. PhotoCredit: Jordan

Giuliana Rancic also looked quite nice i her Gustavo Cadile dress. PhotoCredit: Frazer Harrison, Getty Images

YSL - THE MOVIE

Are you as big a fan of Yves Saint Laurent as me? There will be something to look forward to.
Several new films are coming up soon about one of my all-time favorite designers. The film premieres the 3. april here in Denmark.

The film is about his first years, 1954-57, in the fashion-house of  Dior, that takes the young 21 year old talent in, after he won a category in The International Wool Secretariate Design competition.

The year he meets his destiny in shape of Pierre Bergé, that becomes his partner in business and life.

In the past, I have written a few posts about Yves Saint Laurent here and here, if you want to know more. Otherwise take a look at this trailer. Enjoy!

BEST GOLDEN GLOBE DRESSES

Of course there were bad choices and bad fitting gowns, but I decided to stay positive.

In my opinion, these actresses stood out in their gowns at The 2014 Golden Globe Awards ceremony, that took place on Sunday, January 12, at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, LA.

Here Sandra Bullock in a colorblocked Prabal Gurung gown. Very refreshing, elegant and contemporary. Photo: Jordan Strauss, Invision/AP.

Singer, Taylor Swift in a very nice gown from Carolina Herrera. Photos: Jordan Strauss, Invision/AP and Frederic J. Brown/AFP Getty Images.

Actress and filmmaker, Caitlin FitzGerald in an asymetric babyblue gown from Emilia Wickstead. Photo: Jordan Strauss, Invision/AP.

TV personality, Maria Menounos wore an elegant gown from Max Azria with sheer cutouts and looked quite contemporary. Photo: Jeff Vespa/ WireImage.

Television, film- and stage actress, Edie Falco looked quite nice in a classic, elegant gown from Lanvin. But maybe a different colour would have stood more out on the red carpet. Photo: Jordan Strauss, Invision/AP.

LOCATION - STILL NOT FOUND !

PhotoArt by John Frantsen 2013

We were already excited about our newly found location, but things took another turn again. We changed our minds after we had read the Contract.

Even though the location was perfect - a nice sized shop with a workshop and a big window display, the conditions of the rent and terms, were not in our favor.

So we decided to change our focus and will now concentrate on our production and build up a new blog with all that we have to offer. So stay tuned, if you are up for special offers in the future.

BUCKLE UP !

This past saturday Denmark won The Eurovision song Contest in Malmø, Sweden with the song "Only teardrops" with Emmelie de Forest. Not an obvious winner in my eyes. . .

Already the day after all the hype about, where the Event should take place in Denmark and who is going to be the presenters started. But what I am anticipating is, who is going to dress the participants and the Hostess when that time comes.

Can we find a host that matches the Swedish comedienne and hostess, Petra Mede, who did a great job and looked fabulous in the pink gala dress from Jean Paul Gaultier.

VINTAGE COSTUME CARDS

Finally the prize I won as Close Runner-Up some time ago on the blog Worn Through arrived the other day. It contained three different boxes of Vintage Cards by different Costume designers.
I participated with this Design-sketch. But I had to wait until friends and American connections came my way.

FABRIC CHOICES

Dear readers! There is no excuse. . . I have had other things on my mind, than keeping up my blog. But you are not forgotten. I have a few drafts waiting to be finished. . .

Meanwhile I´ve had a nice meeting about a new project/collaboration coming up with my friend, Rikke.
I´ve been busy going through my archive of patterns, designing and planning a few new dresses.

Since I have promised my niece to make her a Gala dress for next month, I decided that I might as well use her as a model.
She wants a long simple dress with a cowl back, but I am not sure of which fabric I´m going to choose.

The choice is about one of these washed silks, burned orange or gold. Or this turquoise green silk velvet or crushed velvet. . . She liked all of them. What do you think ?

Oh ! -just for you to know, today I went down at Profil Optik to rearrange and change a few of the dresses displayed, for people to see something is going on. Some of the new dresses might also go on display, so pop by, take a look and give me some feedback.

DANISH AWARD DRESSES

Danish Fashion Award, the Fashion Event of the year here in Denmark, took place a few weeks ago at Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen.

Danish Fashion Award was founded 5 years ago by Uffe Buchard and Kim Grenaa, to celebrate and promote Danish fashion industry, since it is the 4. biggest industry in Denmark.

They are also the founders of the fashion magazine DANSK, that just celebrated it´s 10th Anniversary with an Exhibition at Danish Design Centre.

This year they finally succeeded in making Aqua-singer, Lene Nystrøm a Co-Hostess.

Ten designers/brands were appointed to dress her up for the Event. Among them, three stod out in my opinion.
Unfortunately I only found this photo of  the very nice dress from Designers Remix, that looked contemporary.

But a black and white dress by the very talented Ann Sofie Madsen and a futuristic fairytale-dress from Trash Couture by Ann Wiberg looked stunning too.

The rest of her dresses were a little bit out of touch: some quite ordinary and not very well fitted, as was some of the attending guests.

-An Exception was the TV-host, Signe Lindquist, who looked quite stylish and radiant in a vintage-dress from F92.

HOLLYWOOD COSTUMES

Talking of London, wait until Autumn to go ! Because Hollywood´s most memorable costumes is to go on display at V&A from October 20.

"This exhibition will bring together over 100 outfits worn by unforgettable cinema characters, from Dorothy's dress in the Wizard of Oz,  Scarlett O'Hara's velvet 'curtain' dress from Gone With the Wind, Holly Golightly's black Givenchy dress from Breakfast at Tiffany's to Darth Vader's cape."

The Exhibition is curated by Hollywood costume designer Deborah Nadoolman Landis, who explains:
"I didn't go looking for costumes, I went looking for characters. This is not a decorative show. There's plenty of glamour - Marilyn Monroe's dress from Some Like It Hot is jaw-dropping in its nakedness.
But it's not about the fabulousity, it's about what's inside." From The Telegraph.

I am looking foreward to that. Are You coming ?

BALLGOWNS

Dear readers; if you´re going to London this year, you have to take a look at this Exhibition.
In this 60th Jubilee year of Queen Elizabeth’s reign, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London has a promising Exhibition opening in May.

"From debutantes and royalty to charity balls and the red carpet, Ballgowns: British glamour since 1950 charts 60 years of stylish evening wear".

"The exhibition highlights the styles, silhouettes and colours that have been perennial favourites for many years in Britain’s traditional social season of debutante parties, private balls, weddings, and charity events that for long has provided fashion designers with opportunities to create elaborate, tour-de-force evening-wear.
In more recent years, the ballroom has been replaced by the red carpet. Though the context has changed, the ballgown remains a staple in many designers’ collections and continues to serve as an expression of status, protocol, and taste, while simultaneously embodying elements of drama and fantasy".

From Amazon, where the book can be purchased.

FIFTY YEARS LATER

1962

In this previous post some weeks ago, I promised to show you how the dress for my mother finally turned out.

A simple and flattering cut for her, in a rich lace and silk-charmeuse, that I purchased in Montreal a few years back. She was happy and they had a great time celebrating their Anniversary.

ROYAL GALA - A REVIEW

Her Majesty The Queen of Denmark
by Andy Warhol

With much anticipation I finally had a chance to take a look at The Exhibition Royal Gala - Fairytale Haute Couture on the occasion of The Queens 40 years as Sovereign of Denmark .

The Exhibition, that I mentioned in this previous post, was on display at The Chronological Collection of the Danish Kings at Amalienborg Castle in Copenhagen.
A selection of dresses from 4 decades were on display. Most of the dresses were made by couturier Jørgen Bender (1938-1999) in cooperation with the Queen herself.
The Queen´s style is her very own, unconventional and bold. She is not afraid of colors and that is quite refreshing.

There was a few dresses from Erik Mortensen (1926-98) of Balmain. The Queen have through the years recieved several dresses as gifts from Jørgen Bender and Erik Mortensen at different occasions.

Verner Enquist, the compagnon of Bender, took over when he died and have made a few dresses too.

Their successor was taylor, Mogens Eriksen, who also did quite a few of her dresses.

Uffe Frank, a danish designer in Milan, Italy, designed the dress for the Queens 60th birthday and the Wedding-dress of Crown-princess Mary.

Recently tailor Birgitte Thaulow have been the one, who has executed the dresses of the Queen. This process was by the way shown with a small display within the exhibition.

As a professional I was excited to have a closer look at the designs and the execution of the dresses.
But, I must admit that I was slightly disappointed about the very traditional display.
Because most of the dresses was only shown from one side, since they were protected behind glass. Except 4 dresses in a montre that you could walk around. Five of the oldest dresses from the 60´es were even placed several meters away from the viewing point.

Some mirrors here and there would have been nice or some of the dresses slowly turning around, would have given the visitors a better experience.
Apart from that I was happy to see this exhibition, that is recommendable if you are into tailoring, fashion history and royalty.

But I will definitely look forward to the other exhibition.
